Bubsy in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind
Sonic without ringsGenre: action - platform
Publisher: Accolade
Year: 1993
System: Genesis
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
The definitive version of this game. Plays must faster and smoother than the SNES version. Sonic clone Gives a good first impression but gets worse over time Every face button jumps Long landing animation each time you land a jump. Really annoying and breaks the action when moving slowly. Most enemies just kind of stand there and offer one hit kills which encourages slow movement. Like Sonic without any rings. Very momentum based movement. For example if you're running to right and jump, then hold left you'll slowly move left but if you let go before landing you'll shoot to the right. Very weird to get a handle on. Hard to explain just how floaty the controls are.
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
Pretty darn good Lots of paths to take, increasing replayability Interesting gimmicks like slides which you can jump off of as they whisk you around and vertical areas you can see and try to get to.
Theme Score: 2
Theme Notes:
Lots of 'tude Tiring hearing Bubsy talk all the time You're a cat collecting balls of yarn
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
Lots of animation of Bubsy Everything else seems drab in comparison. Enemies have only a couple frames of animation and don't react when they kill you. You just touch them and show a long death animation. Graphics are pleasant if a bit Amiga quality
Audio Score: 1
Audio Notes:
Bubsy talks a lot No sound effects when bopping enemies which feels weird Same song plays in every level of each world. They're...ok but repeat after 20 sec and get old fast. Music is one channel and sounds like its played on a kazoo. Very circus-ish Annoying and loud downward scale plays EVERY TIME you ride on a water slide which happens frequently.
