Cal Ripken Jr. Baseball

Small ball

Genre: sports - baseball

Publisher: Mindscape

Year: 1992

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Some weird physics. Groundballs barely leave the infield which leads to a lot of seeing eye doubles because the outfielders don't come in to get the ball. Meanwhile a hit into the gap is generally a single because the outfielders have a cannon for an arm and will cut you down when you go for second base. Incredibly slow pace for pitches, and for fielding. The only thing fast is throwing. Hard to hit the ball. The bat doesn't seem to connect where you would expect it to. Pitching is pointless since you can't affect the trajectory of the ball. It goes straight no matter what.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Just exhibition and season modes. Barebones

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

It's a generic player licensed sports title. Expectations are very low No MLB or MLBPA licenses. Only 16 teams including none in Seattle or Houston. Grumble

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Not bad. Players are very small but they go for a realistic look. Minimal animation The stadium feels empty and boring Framerate is quite low while fielding which makes it difficult to catch the ball

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

Creepy umpire calls out all balls and strikes with a voice like a bad Batman impression "strooike". Dorky music plays continuously

Overall Score: 38

Review ID: 811
