Caliber .50 for Genesis

Image: MobyGames

Caliber .50

Commando lite

Genre: action - gun

Publisher: Mentrix Software

Year: 1991

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Top down like Commando, Smash TV, or Cannon Fodder. Use B to shoot and A or C to rotate left or right, respectively. Extremely slow movement. Enemies drop power ups which seemingly do nothing and ammo which provides health. Getting ammo also upgrades weapon from pea shooter to rocket launcher to flamethrower but the "best" weapon has such short range it's actually the worst. Had some fun but it made me wish I was playing something similar but better.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Infinite spawning enemies. Only a handful of enemy types are repeated ad nauseum. Levels end with boss fights which provide much needed variety. Slow movement makes these more difficult thant they ought to be. Some branching paths give the allure of freedom but there's really only one path to take.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Generic Rambo setting Wish there were more guns and some sort of personality. Forgettable.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Simple. Looks like a mid 80s arcade game. No effects or animation

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Almost no sound effects. Makes the game seem sparse and empty. Simple music.

Overall Score: 41

Review ID: 812
