Genre: minigame - n/a

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1992

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Five games: Half pipe - The controls make no sense. How do I maintain or increase velocity? How do I turn or perform a trick? I can't last for more than about 5 seconds before I either fall off or slow to a crawl and stop boarding. Foot bag - Ok this one I can relate to. I did a lot of hacky sacking back in the day. Unfortunately it amounts to little more than pressing A when the ball nears the ground. It's about as engaging as Arkanoid without any blocks or side walls. Good for a couple of minutes worth of playtime. Surfing - About as fun as balancing a stick on your finger while walking. Again, I couldn't figure out how to last more than a few seconds. The water just crept right up to me without any way to speed up. Lame Skating - Terrible runner. Alternate pressing up and down to move forward and press B to jump. Good luck getting more than a few screens forward. Laggy controls and almost no lateral movement makes it virtually impossible to avoid falling. BMX - Excitebike, minus the excite. Mashing C seems to maybe give you some speed which caps out almost immediately. Press B to jump over hazards. The weird thing is that hazards only appear on the very bottom of the track so if you just stay in the center you never have to move up and down. All you have to do is jump. Yawn

Level Design Score: 0

Level Design Notes:

Only five events. There's zero variety in each playthrough.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

I like the beach setting. Makes me feel warm.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Surprisingly good sprites and animation. There's barely anything here but what is here looks decent. Backgrounds are just a single piece of art, but they have nice detail and even some parallax scrolling. There's not enough here to award it even a passing grade but it's better looking than California Games 2 for the SNES.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

Two measures play over and over and over.
