Carrier Aces for SNES

Image: MobyGames

Carrier Aces

More realistic than 1942

Genre: simulation - flight

Publisher: Gametek

Year: 1995

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Yet another Cybersoft / Synergistic title. This is three in a row now. The other two were Air Cavalry and Spectre. Yet another Mode 7 title with the same engine. Training sessions are thankfully available. Dogfight is completely impossible. Worst dogfighting I've ever seen in a video game. The Japanese Zero is so much better than the US fighters that it's not even funny. Torpedo and Dive Bombing have a trick to them (correct elevation and timing) so there's nothing to them. Top Gun for NES is more fun than this.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

7 levels/scenarios which have a mix of 4 different modes. The game is basically just a series of minigames.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

I really want to like this game. Fighting the air war of Pacific theater is a great idea.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Same horrible Mode 7 graphics with poor scaling of the sprites.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Minimal sounds and music

Overall Score: 32

Review ID: 97
