Dashin' Desperadoes

Cowboy Joe & Mac Racing

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Data East

Year: 1993

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Plays like Gourmet Race in Kirby Super Star. I hate Gourmet Race. Race against a computer foe to reach the end of the level. Controls are fine. Not terribly responsive but you're always running to the right so there's not much need. The gameplay boils down to simply timing your jumps properly. You can also throws bomb to stun your enemy, like a banana in SMK.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

The stages become punishing difficult almost immediately, even on the easy difficulty. Once you fall behind there's almost no chance of catching up.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

You're a Wild West cowboy, in a modern city, trying to reach the cute girl at the end of the stage so she can reward you with a kiss. I dare you to show this to one of your feminist friends. If you have one. I don't.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Data East had some talented pixel artists back in the day. The characters and animation look like reskins of the Joe & Mac sprites, which is a very good thing. I wish that it wasn't always in a split screen, but credit where credit is due.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Fun Western tunes. Great sound effects including some nice audio samples.

Overall Score: 49
