Death Duel for Genesis

Death Duel

Battle Clash meets Mortal Kombat

Genre: shooter - gallery

Publisher: RazorSoft

Year: 1992

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

It's basically a slow, boring Battle Clash with a tiny, fleshy monster to shoot and kill instead of a massive, fast-moving mech. Press Start to lock yourself in place and move the cursor. There's rarely a need to do this as you can scroll the screen and move the cursor simultaneously anyway. After one fight you've seen and done everything you can. Boredom sets in immediately afterward. Oh and did I mention that every fight has a 60 second time limit?

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

The objective is to hit certain parts of the enemy. Removing limbs is the only way to cause enough damage for the creature to die. This is all well and good but the game gives you no indication of what to shoot at. These guys don't have the standard glowing red spot. And shooting the weakspot doesn't even give you an auditory clue so you have to discover the weakness and memorize it I guess. Each enemy is only mildly different. Again, you've seen the entire range of this game after a single fight.

Theme Score: 0

Theme Notes:

Sex and gore are this game's only selling points. For sex, the ring girl who opens each fight is one of the most ridiculous character models I've seen in a retro title. She also has some dialogue written by a horny 15 year old. Sheesh. As for gore, you shoot monsters and their appendages explode into bloody mess.

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

The artwork is, in a word, awful. Granted, the sprites of the monsters are interesting due to some decent animation. That's fortunate since they're pretty much the only thing to look at. The rest of the artwork and sprites were clearly drawn by a 10 year old in MS Paint, particularly your character's sprite which is one of the dumbest mechs I've ever seen.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

Typical early Genesis sounds. The music isn't horrible but I'm taking off points because the game misses the opportunity to use audio to communicate when you're hitting the right spot on the enemies. The sound is just there instead of being helpful.
