Decap Attack

The Mummy DeDemastered

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1991

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Extremely slippery controls but some interesting mechanics like fluttering in the air Yoshi style by mashing on the jump button. It feels awkward at first but is quite fun to play with. Your attacks include throwing a skull if you've got it or a forward attack from your abdomen. That's long enough to reach the slow moving enemies. So combat isn't a problem. Overall, the controls are fairly good. The only real problem is that power ups are gathered but have to be activated from a pause screen and only last for a whopping 10 seconds. They're basically not worth using at all. Huge missed opportunity there.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Level design is also good. It feels like a well-crafted Japanese platformer with levels that stretch you and your understanding of how the movement tech works. Difficulty ramps up slowly and they're fun things to do in each level. There are three or four sub levels per world with a boss at the end of the final sub level. So it follows the Mario template.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

The theme is weird. Kind of a Halloween cartoon feel to it. You're a red headless mummy with eyes in your abdomen. Not quite sure what's going on there. There's skulls and dead enemies all over the place.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Okay so the artwork is underwhelming especially the backgrounds. They're as flat as can be and feature very little detail. The sprites on the other hand are cute and animate well. I wish I could score a higher but it pails in comparison to many other 16-bit titles

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

The music is excellent. The first track isn't all that great but most of the songs after that would fit in well in a Capcom title. In fact, it sounds a little bit like a Halloween-themed Mega Man soundtrack. Unfortunately the sounds aren't great. They're not terribly annoying, but some of them are more harsh than I care to listen to.

Overall Score: 77
