Deep Blue for TurboGrafx-16

Deep Blue

The worst shooter I've ever played

Genre: shooter - horizontal

Publisher: NEC

Year: 1989

System: TurboGrafx-16

Gameplay Score: 0

Gameplay Notes:

Sluggish controls. Weapons have no spread - they only shoot straight forward. Enemies have obnoxious movement patterns making them impossible to avoid. They move forward, then backward, then up and down and come in huge swarms. Once you've ceded any vertical space you have to wait out the wave since your weapons can't fire vertically. Maddeningly difficult. And not in a "wow that wass hard but I see what I could do next time" sort of way.

Level Design Score: 0

Level Design Notes:

Wave after wave of unavoidable enemies as you swim straight ahead. There are zero features to the level.

Theme Score: 0

Theme Notes:

You're a fish. Shooting other fish. There's no setup, setting, or story.

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

The background has nothing of interest. It looks like you're swimming in a fish tank. Sprites are ok, I suppose, but feature no animation. There's no slowdown, so I guess that's a plus. The screen is highly letterboxed such that the playfield only takes about 60% of the screen.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

The music and sound are easily this game's best feature. And they suck. The music is little more than a single chime arranged into a midly interesting melody. The sound effects are repetitive but not abrasive.

Overall Score: 4
