Dirt Trax FX

Super ExciteBike

Genre: racing - bike

Publisher: Acclaim

Year: 1995

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

The gameplay gets repetitive once the novelty wears off, but it controls well for the most part. Hold down on A to go and steer your way around everyone.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Definitely a strength of this title. the tracks are all short (like 10-15 second laps) so all races are about 2-4 minutes long. Some tracks are very tight while others have long stretches. Lots of different obstacles like moguls or water hazards keep this interesting.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Dirt bike racing isn't my thing, but it's fine. The 8 selectable characters (actually, polygonal disembodied heads) are pure nightmare fuel. They're also generic 90s radical characters. Read: backward baseball cap, goatee, headbands, bowl cuts, and shaved-head writing like the Kris Kross guys.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

As far as early polygons go this one looks and moves great. The framerate is more than adequate.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

In-game music is just a beat fast beat that sounds a bit like the Knight Rider theme song. Otherwise you've got are the bike noises and super obnoxious sounds play that when someone comes up behind you. It sounds a bit like the horn on the van in Ant-Man. It plays La Cucaracha, right? Well this sound effect doesn't play that song but it's similar, and it's annoying.
