DJ Boy for Genesis
Review #4152
DJ Boy
Beat em up autoscroller
Gameplay
Strets of Rage on wheels is probably too generous - maybe this is Two Crude Dudes on wheels? In any case, it's an autoscroller where you can beat up baddies who skate around the arena.
Punch, kick, and jump. No special moves or grabs. Kick has a crazy long animation and terrible hit detection so it's pretty useless. Punch is fast and works fine anyway so there's no need. Unfortunately, you can only jump kick (no jump punch) and again the hit detection makes that move unusable as well.
Frustratingly slow movement.
Enemy AI is stupid. Most of the time you can simply avoid them and wait for them to leave the screen. Killing them drops money which can be used to buy upgrades at the end of each level, but otherwise all combat is optional.
Overall the controls are subpar for a brawler.
Level Design
I already mentioned that almost all combat is optional. Therefore enemies aren't the main obstacle, but rather environmental hazards to avoid while fighting. It's an autoscroller so these hazards appear frequently in later levels.
Each level has a boss - as you'd expect. Your limited moveset becomes especially apparent during these fights.
Theme
Has an arcade feel to it. The setting itself is pretty dorky. You're a cartoony Marty McFly guy rolling around the city on your roller skates. There's not much more to it in terms of theme. The characters have a Japanese mafia vibe to them, again with a strong cartoon style.
Art Style
I mean, it's passable, but extremely simple. Sprites have few frames of animation. Lame character designs, unless you like kitschy Japanese stuff.
Audio
Music isn't all that bad. Again, it's arcadey and generally pleasant. There are few sounds but overall the sound is one of the better aspects of the game.
