Donald in Maui Mallard for Genesis

Image: MobyGames

Donald in Maui Mallard

Donald Duck's Batman moment

Genre: action - punch n kick

Publisher: Disney Interactive

Year: 1996

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

You can switch between two characters - Donald (with a gun) or Maui Mallard (with a bo staff). Good hit detection although enemies have no hitbox so they can walk right through you. Thankfully they removed the David Perry camera that was in the SNES version. Instead this version keeps you roughly in the center of the screen. So much better! With that positive, the negative here is that the game runs much slower. Probably because it's a PAL region game so it runs at 50 MHz. As a result the controls are sluggish compared to the SNES version.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Typical western maze with an insane amount of collectables. Feels a bit like Cool Spot. Who likes this crap?

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

I really like the Disney aesthetic combined with a detective and ninja motif.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Great graphics that aren't as good as the SNES version. Less color

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

The music and sound are significantly worse than the SNES version. The music in particular is simple and boring and overly quiet. The sound effects also are generic as opposed to the interesting sounds in the SNES version.

Overall Score: 56
