Mazin Saga: Mutant Fighter
Teenage Mutant Ninja Power RangersGenre: action - beat em up
Publisher: Sega
Year: 1993
System: Genesis
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
Plays like TMNT with Leonardo as the only playable character. But with sprites the size of those in Captain America and the Avengers (read: they're tiny). Movement is fast but attacks generally stop you dead in your tracks so it takes away some of the oomph. Still, the controls are responsive and fun. Attacks include a sword slash, an E. Honda/Chun LI lightning jabs, a jump kick, a jump and downward stab, and a grab/throw. Two main problems with the gameplay - first, there's nothing to do. Enemies spawn so infrequently and are so stupid that there's little challenge. Second, it's one player only. Fighting the final boss in each level is done via a 2D view like a 1v1 fighting game. This mode controls extremely poorly. It's novel but runs what is otherwise a decent game.
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
Levels happen in very short segments. Each level has three or four "rounds" so you visit 2-1, 2-2, 2-3 and so on until reaching the boss. The locales themselves were interesting but they're incredibly short. Enemy waves are small and easy to deal with. I rather enjoyed the levels despite their simplicity.
Theme Score: 4
Theme Notes:
Has a strong manga vibe. Reminds me of The Guyver, which no one remembers. Weird enemies
Art Style Score: 4
Art Style Notes:
Again the sprites are so tiny! Otherwise everything looks great.
Audio Score: 3
Audio Notes:
I enjoyed most of the tracks. It wouldn't be out of place in an episode of Power Rangers but has a fast beat and deep bass. Unfortunately every track has the same beat, so it gets old after a while.
