F1 ROC: Race of Champions

Arcade style racer

Genre: racing - simulation

Publisher: Seta

Year: 1992

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Ok this is more like it. Love the arcade racing feel. The view is raised up behind the car which gives a birds eye view and much greater draw distance. Has a wonderful sense of speed. On-screen arrows point out imminent turns like you often see in top-down racers. Full screen view feels nice as well. The controls are very weighted and grounded. No floatiness at all. It's difficult to make tight corners as the brakes don't kick in very well, so later levels are annoying since they have a lot of tight corners. It gets boring after a while but it feels nice while it lasts. Fun to play.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Lots of tracks - maybe 24 or so? The early tracks are nice because they're just long rounded turns while later levels are a bunch of 90+ degree angles which isn't nearly as fun.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

It's a generic racing game. Presentation is excellent but there's nothing exciting about the setting of the game

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Pretty basic, although it looks good for an early SNES game. There's some slowdown when other cars are on screen

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Arcadey music in the pre- and post-race screens. Gets me pumped for a race. In-game sounds are predictable but the music really makes up for it.

Overall Score: 59
