F1 ROC 2: Race of Champions

Great graphics, weird design

Genre: racing - simulation

Publisher: Seta

Year: 1994

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Far more floaty than the original. Feels like they tried to ape F-Zero. Not a bad thing, but different. Controls feel good The gameplay isn't as good overall. It takes a long time to get around another car so you spend a ton of time driving just behind or next to them, bumping against them over and over again.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Super weird game design. You run a race, win some prize money, and then you have to use that money to buy new tracks. You don't just go to the next race like in all other racing games. So you can run the same race over and over again. However, you can also invest in R&D instead of straight up buying new parts to improve your car. It let's you spend as much or as little money as you want so I'm confused about how much to spend and what I'll get for it. Very strange. Start with a sportscar and at some point you graduate to another class and finally up to the F-1 cars. I kind of just want to play that top level of cars.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Generic racing game.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Looks fantastic. The sense of speed rivals F-Zero. Performance is good, even with several cars on screen.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Unremarkable

Overall Score: 56
