Fighting Masters

Kaiju test their might

Genre: fighting - 1v1

Publisher: Treco

Year: 1992

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

There's only a jump button and an attack. The A button seemingly does nothing. I also can't figure out how to do any special moves other than grabs and grappling. It feels almost like a copycat of King of Monsters. The controls are laggy and imprecise but not horrible. Movement is fast enough. I couldn't figure out how to reliably grab and throw enemies, but that's how to deal the most damage. Each fight is over once you run out of energy. There's no two rounds here.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

There are only a handful of arenas, maybe only three or four of them. They look nice but don't have any animation in the background.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

The setting is bonkers. A star is about to go supernova and wipe out 12 advanced civilizations and an omnipotent being offers to rescue one of the civilizations based on a fighting tournament. So yeah the stakes are high. The competitors are all a variety of different monsters and aliens, including a dragon, a rock monster, a My Little pony, a big fat blob guy and other sorts of humanoid creations.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

The graphics are pretty decent. Animation is minimal but the sprites are large and very well drawn. And the designs are crazy. It doesn't go overboard with gore and the backgrounds are again very well drawn. The HUD looks like it was tacked on at the end of development.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

The music is a highlight. Sounds range from good to painfully bad, like the bell that rings when a fight ends.

Overall Score: 46
