Final Zone for Genesis

Final Zone

MEH-ch Warrior

Genre: action - gun

Publisher: Renovation Products

Year: 1990

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Isometric view. Shoot in the direction you're facing. Turning is incredibly wonky and unreliable so best strategy is to simply pick a direction, shoot continuously, and move your mech to hit your target. Fast movement which is thankfully slowed by ceiling slowdown while shooting. Best to just shoot constantly. Never ending supply of mostly harmless enemies ala Wizards & Warriors. Fun for a couple of minutes but no staying power. Supposedly there are many weapons but I only use the main gun and see no way to do anything else.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

Seemingly endless, procedurally generated arena. The objective is to kill a set number of enemies and they randomly spawn in when you scroll the screen so you just have to pick a direction and move continuously. Gets boring quickly. Levels have a different biome but it's just color swaps. One level has just brown ground while another has some blue puddles. In other words, every level is identical but with small cosmetic differences.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Mechs!

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Sprites look good but have very minimal animation. Also there's only a handful of sprites. Very grainy graphics and poor use of color. Heavy use of browns, greys, and not much else. Explosions look nice

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

I like the music but the constant shooting sound drowns it out.
