Final Fantasy II
Showing its age, but still incredibleGenre: rpg - japanese
Publisher: Squaresoft
Year: 1991
System: SNES
Gameplay Score: 5
Gameplay Notes:
Nearly perfect RPG gameplay. The Active-time Battle system gives battles both depth and anxiety. Random battles are too frequent but again they have depth. There are so many enemies and so much magic and a huge cast of characters who are easy to become invested in.
Level Design Score: 5
Level Design Notes:
So many awesome set pieces and sequences.
Theme Score: 5
Theme Notes:
A deep and original story is the highlight here. It's not a standard "bad guy wants to destroy the world" trope. Instead it's a nuanced story about redemption, forgiveness, sacrifice, and faith. Cecil's character arc is the central thread, but equally important are the storylines and characterizations of Rydia, Rosa, Kain, and Golbez. This is the game that reinvented video game storytelling.
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
Simple yet clean. The side view is attractive and animation is minimal but fun to watch
Audio Score: 5
Audio Notes:
One of the best soundracks of all time. Easy perfect score
