G-LOC: Air Battle for Genesis

G-LOC: Air Battle

Top Gun 3

Genre: shooter - corridor

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1993

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Looks and plays a lot like the NES games Top Gun 1 & 2. A much slower paced game than After Burner or Air Diver since most enemies fly away from you instead of toward you. Movement is decent, although you're still constrained to a little box like on After Burner. Gameplay is incredibly simple - just lock on and fire a missile. You can try to use your gun but it only works at very close range. There isn't a ton of variety but more than something like After Burner. Simple but fun.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Each mission is broken into 4 or 5 segments. I enjoy the small goals. A radio buddy announces your objective for each segment. It's always a number of enemies you need to down. The view switches between in cockpit or behind which is kind of annoying to be honest. I wish I could choose or else just stay in cockpit.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Absolutely love the mission briefing which has no words but instead is a top-down view of a war room table. Military guys are crowded around the table pointing out your mission objectives. Love it. End level animation shows you celebrating like you're Maverick.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Nice looking sprites which animate well. There are a handful of backgrounds which are reused in every level. None are very detailed but they're a lot better looking than Thunder Blade. The huge HUD is also helpful. Overall the graphics are spartan, but they work.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

Really dumb, tinny song plays the whole time. Sound effects are minimal and lack that satisfying crunch.

Overall Score: 57
