Galaga '90 for TurboGrafx-16
Review #7036
Galaga '90
Party like it's 1979
Gameplay
I've never been a huge fan of Galaga and this update does nothing to change my opinion. It's still just a slight variation on Space Invaders or Centipede. In other words, you're locked to the bottom of the screen and have to mash away as enemies move back and forth at the top of the screen. There's some variety in the levels but not in the gameplay, as power-ups are few and far between. I get bored after long, but I know this game has its fans.
Level Design
One trick pony. Enemy waves change up level to level but the core mechanics never get changed up. Apparently there's only so much that can be done on a single screen.
Theme
I mean, it's cute and all but it's got about as much personality as an early 80s arcade game can. Unless you've got nostalgia for the original I don't think you're going to get out over this game.
Art Style
The effects are nice, with some scrolling and effects thrown in. The sprites are still tiny but they've got some nice color.
Audio
Oy. That shot sound. Someone must've felt it was iconic and had to be not only preserved but highlighted. But oh wow it's it annoying. I can't even tell if there is music. I think there is but it can't be heard behind the incessant pew pew of your cannon. Make. It. Stop!
