Ghouls 'n Ghosts

The one where you can shoot up

Genre: action - hack n slash

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1989

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Stiff controls which are the hallmark of this series. You can shoot upward. Yay

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Design is simple but there are still lots of memorable moments and set pieces. The enemy placement feels extreemly cheap here, even more so than in other G&G games. Still good but requires memorization more than reaction.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Black background. Love the enemy designs but poor animation and effects take away from the experience. I know it's a product of its time but Super G&G released only a couple of years later and looks lightyears ahead of this title.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Same here. The music and sound effects are severely constrained by the technology. All I can think of is the soundtrack from SG&G and wish that I was listening to it instead of this.

Overall Score: 67
