Goal! for SNES

Goal!

The one with an overrated USA squad

Genre: sports - soccer

Publisher: Jaleco

Year: 1992

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Side-on view which limits how much of the field you can see. Includes a radar to compensate. Movement is quick which makes the field seems fairly small. Enemies swarm to you and stick to you like glue so it's hard to setup plays. But that's par for the course for most soccer games. Can't switch player without the ball so on defense I tended to run the full length of the pitch with my striker. Kinda weird. A pass button and two kick buttons that seem to do the same thing. 8 directional kicking but it's super hard to get it to go the way you want. Nearly impossible to pass and shoot quickly since the receiving player will fire it in whatever direction they're facing. Yet another soccer game that I never once scored a goal. Controls are otherwise decent.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

Only two modes - exhibition and a "cup". I like that they gave the USA squad high scores rather than middling ratings like all the European-developed games.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

I hate soccer

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

The player sprites look...weird. They have minimal frames of animation and their resting position looks like they're hunching over like Igor. They just look unnatural. Also the game plays super long animations when stealing or receiving the ball so it's easiest to just keep the ball and try to run around guys rather than pass it. Shooting also has along animation so it's hard to get a shot off.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

The rare soccer game that has in-game music. It's a pleasant, arcadey tune. Sound effects are good.
