Hammerlock Wrestling

Tri pane window treatment

Genre: fighting - wrestling

Publisher: Jaleco

Year: 1994

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 0

Gameplay Notes:

What on earth is happening in this game? The name of the game is to grapple and I presume you then pick an attack through some combination of button presses but for the life of me I can't figure out how to do anything. When you're not grappling the four face buttons let you punch, kick, run, or jump-kick, but these are useless as they never connect, even if the opponent is directly in front of you. So it comes down to grappling which again is an utter mystery. Your character is as immobile as any horrible wrestling game. The screen is cut into 3 equal sized panes, with the middle pane being the one where the gameplay happens. The top pane shows cinematic-style animations of your characters while the bottom pane is the same for your opponent.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

Levels equate to opponents in this game I suppose. There are 12 wrestlers but they all seem to play about the same, with minor variation in speed. Game modes include Exhibition, Champion League, Tournament, Top Ranking. I won an Exhibition match but couldn't win in any other mode so I'm not sure what the difference is.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

The wrestlers definitely have character. The over-the-top animation gives the game atmosphere but the tiny play area hurt the game's presentation.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

It's a mixed bag. I like the animations but the consequence is that the action takes place with teeny tiny sprites that lack detail and animation of their own. It was definitely an interesting choice and one that I'm going to call ill-advised.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

No music, just crowd noise. Blech

Overall Score: 16
