Imperium

Robotech meets Raiden

Genre: shooter - vertical

Publisher: Vic Tokai

Year: 1993

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Has a lot going for it. Adjustable speed, four weapons to toggle between at any time, and a health system. Takes a long time to power up your weapons but I've you do they're screen filling beasts. No pickups. Power ups and health grabs happen automatically just by killing bad guys which earned you EXP like it's a RPG.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Enemy patterns remind me of Galaga. Long stretches where nothing comes on screen. Every level is just an autoscroller upward. Levels are way too long with the same wave of enemies requesting over and over for far too long. Not enough variety.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

After watching the opening text crawl I thought I was playing a sentient AI fighting back against evil human overlords but then it showed a human sitting up in a mech so I'm not sure what's going on. Oh and the game is set in AD 2027. They were... optimistic of humanity's chances of being a spacefaring society in only a few decades. I must say though, the opening animation showing the mech being lot up as it rides an elevator is incredibly impressive.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Lots of slowdown. Nice animation in the backgrounds. Not impressed by the sprites. Most enemies are boring orbs.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Honestly not very good stuff. It's all one instrument sound. The compositions are ok. They don't loop quickly anyway. The sounds are pleasant but not special.

Overall Score: 66
