Impossamole

Time to get that mole removed

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: NEC

Year: 1991

System: TurboGrafx-16

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

They spelled it wrong. This game is impossible. A key problem is the 20% draw distance. Enemies spawn infinitely and attack from offscreen so it's very difficult to avoid taking damage. I think the dev knew this so they gave you a fair amount of health. Your main attack is a kick with zero range. Thankfully there are weapons to pick up which increase the range and in some cases shoot projectiles. These have limited ammo and some enemies can only be attacked by the kick. Ok movement.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

The designs aren't all that bad. Mostly linear levels that weave up, down, left and right. Colelct X widgets to unlock the exit. Ugh Your sprite always stays at the bottom 20% of the screen which leads to tons of blind jumps. Enemies pop out for cheap hits and hang out within your hitbox to deal damage on nearly every frame. Almost no i-frames.

Theme Score: 1

Theme Notes:

You're a mole wearing a Superman cape. The Brits had weird game concepts.

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

Amateurish. Looks like an 8-bit title. Tiny sprites.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

The music is way better than this game deserves. It reminds me of the music on Robocop for the Game Boy. Good stuff.

Overall Score: 29
