J.J. & Jeff

Adventure Island starring Beavis and Butt-Head

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: NEC

Year: 1990

System: TurboGrafx-16

Gameplay Score: 0

Gameplay Notes:

I'm at a lost trying to explain this game. The movement is truly bizarre. You build up momentum even when stopped by an obstacle. So you can be walking and then running while pinned up against some block. Let go when your momentum is maintained such that if you jump with your finger completely off the d-pad mind you and you'll launch forward in the direction of your momentum. I've never seen anything like this. The screen scrolls to the right but won't go back like it's Super Mario Bros or something. You can bop enemies or use a kick that has terrible range and duration. Crouching causes you to spray a paint can but this doesn't affect enemies so I'm not sure why it exists. Kicking also exposes hidden coins and fruit and other secrets so you pretty much have to mash on the kicking button as you move to the right. You can't jump while kicking so this makes it hard to avoid enemies who quickly appear on screen. Lastly, your health slowly dwindles and must be replenished by collecting a fruit. So basically this game is Adventure Island with horrible controls.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

Go to the right. Thankfully there aren't many platforming sections because the controls would not allow you to do this. But there are many stupid sections. In the very first level, there's a pit that cannot be jumped across. In order to cross it, you have to stand in this specific spot jump and at the right time kick. This causes platforms to appear which let you cross. An NPC hints at this secret kick, but the NPC is at the very start of the level in a secret area themselves and because of the screen scrolling you can't go back to that spot to learn about the hint. Just horribly horribly designed.

Theme Score: 0

Theme Notes:

I don't know what's going on here, but this game is full of potty humor. I can't even begin to describe how juvenile the supposed humor is. I can only guess that JJ and Jeff are some sort of Japanese equivalent of Beavis and Butthead

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

Large sprites are technically well drawn but man are they off-putting. The two playable This is not a good looking gamecharacters are guys in ugly colored suits with enormous heads. Kind of like dumb and dumber I suppose. The backgrounds are completely flat with no scrolling or anything interesting going on. This is not a good looking game
