James Pond: Underwater Agent for Genesis

James Pond: Underwater Agent

Ecco the bad Ian Fleming pun

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Electronic Arts

Year: 1991

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Literally floaty controls. You Bob up and down slightly as you move. This makes it hard to avoid damage. And when you take damage it's every frame. So if you sit on an enemy for a second your toast. Movement is otherwise responsive, although there's only one attack so there's almost nothing to do but swim around and avoid enemies. Major collect-a-thon going on

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Collect X number of widgets to open the exit. Level 2 is an escort mission where an NPC has to follow you to be collected. But every level is a slight variation on the same theme.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Each mission is prefaced by a card explaining your objective. I guess it's vaguely like a mission-based James Bond theme but I don't really see the connection.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Very early gen stuff but it looks good enough. The backgrounds aren't as busy as future installments in this series, which I appreciate.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Pretty simple, upbeat music and unpretentious sounds

Overall Score: 44

Review ID: 992
