Kyle Petty's No Fear Racing

The Barkley Shut Up & Jam of racing games

Genre: racing - arcade

Publisher: Williams

Year: 1995

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 0

Gameplay Notes:

Clearly wants to be the NBA Jam of stock car racing games but it has more in common with Barkley Shut Up and Jam. i.e. it's big on ideas and poor on execution It plays fast, but the framerate looks like a slideshow. Unbelievably bad game design where you have tires and gas which deplete with no obvious way to restore them. I'm still confused about it. There are a bunch of road hazards like water or oil slicks and some pickups to restore your gas or tires. I accidentally drove over a tire pickup but it was dumb luck. In fact the whole game seems like a game of chance. Bizarre gameplay

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

The levels actually have some structure rather than just being a boring oval. There are a lot of them as well so props for making stuff. Unfortunately you can't enjoy anything about the tracks because of the awful gameplay

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Very arcadey feel. Nice attempt at making NASCAR not stupid. Still a dumb racing game tho

Art Style Score: 0

Art Style Notes:

Horrible. Possibly the worst framerate in a 16 bit game

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Decent arcade sounds and music

Overall Score: 21

Review ID: 283
