Lawnmower Man for Genesis
Review #4308
Lawnmower Man
Not a lawn care simulator
Gameplay
Slow jumping
One-hit deaths
Too weighty physics (take a second to start or stop moving)
Includes a difficulty setting which the SNES version lacked.
Level Design
Took a while to figure out how to exit the first screen (press up on a nondescript "door" uggh)
Very simple go-to-the-right level design
The VR levels are on-the-rails with no brake so you just have to react and move left or right and sometimes up-down or even shoot enemies. It's a weird mashup with the sidescroller levels but it gives some variety and they're kind of fun.
Levels are much shorter and easier than the SNES version, although the hacking minigame is just plain stupid. The puzzles don't make any sense. Also some of the platforming puzzles are nonsensical as well and since you have a time limit there's not much time to figure it out. The game could've been decent if the levels were better crafted.
Theme
Weird, campy early 90s aesthetic. The titular Lawnmower Man looks like Nuclear Man from Superman IV.
Art Style
VR levels are pretty and very slick, especially the one where you're flying around as some sort of craft. They remind me of Hyperzone for the SNES.
Colorful but simple 1992-style graphics
Visually interesting but boring rail-runner VR levels
Your sprite looks far more interesting in this version than the SNES version.
Audio
Decent music and unobstructive sound
