Legend for SNES

Legend

Slowman the Barbarian

Genre: action - beat em up

Publisher: Seika

Year: 1994

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

This is so frustrating. This game has a lot going for it but the painfully slow speed of movement and attacks hold it back considerably. It could've been a great game. Only one character to fight as - a Conan analog. Enemies rush to surround you and the guy behind always attacks just as you're finishing a three-step attack on the guy in front so using the normal attack is only useful when there's only one enemy. Instead you have to use the jump attack, going back and forth across the screen. This is the entire game. The game is incredibly shallow as a result.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Pretty standard corridors with no env hazards. Some annoying foreground elements that block the view. Waves of enemies come in batches of 4 which makes things intense.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

Love the Conan setting. Unlike anything else in this genre on the SNES. Similar to the 1v1 Battle Blaze or Weaponlord but it also reminds me of Wizards and Warriors. The overworld map sequence is cool as it shows a rolled out scroll and your sword tracing the path that you'll take next. Nice touch.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Very nice artwork and animation. I like the cartoony yet gritty designs. The sprites are in the small side but again are very well animated. Has some effects like rain and lightning in stage 2. Clear HUD.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Great music. Sounds effects are only ok but the music makes up for it.

Overall Score: 56
