Gameplay

Massive variety of gameplay
Includes overhead and side-view levels plus lots of mini-game diversions such as gambling, dungeon crawling, and even an arcade with a fully playable Gradius
Massive boss fights are
Very responsive and simple two-button controls
Fun powerups to collect

Level Design

Overhead stages play a bit like River City Rampage with shops to visit and branching paths and infinitely spawning enemies
Side-view levels are more traditional hack n slash levels with strong platforming

Very Japanese but in a good way. Very silly

Wonderful graphics and animations
Perhaps the most colorful game in the SNES library

Music fits the theme perfectly. Excellent boss themes and Japanese-themed compositions with lots of string sounds.

Includes an unbelievably annoying weight system, limiting both what you can carry and what your character can use as a weapon. If you’re overloaded, you are unable to move. After buying a few things at the weapons shop I thought the game was broken. I had to Google it and read about this weight mechanic. So stupid. It makes the game nigh unplayable. Even with a minimal inventory of a knife, a helm, and two food rations I could barely walk.
