Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past
The GOATGenre: adventure - overhead
Publisher: Nintendo
Year: 1992
System: SNES
Gameplay Score: 5
Gameplay Notes:
Perfect controls. 8 direction movement. Fast movement. Weapons have predictable, wide range and quick animations. Enemies have understandable hit boxes. They also have smart AI that is consistent and understandable. The only nitpick might be the menuing since only two items can be equipped. Would've been nice to cycle thru items with L and R.
Level Design Score: 5
Level Design Notes:
The alternate dimension gimmick is brilliant. Makes exploration even better since there as the two layers to consider. Established the Metroidvania formula of providing freedom to explore but having a gate that must be overcome by acquiring a new capability. Memorable landmarks and starkly different biomes made it relatively easy to navigate the sprawling (for the time) map.
Theme Score: 5
Theme Notes:
C'mon, what's not to love? The high fantasy setting is believable and inviting, while the inclusion of a parallel dimension is intially shocking and unsettling. Zelda was doing it long before Stranger Things!
Art Style Score: 5
Art Style Notes:
Timeless artwork. Looks as good in 2021 as it did in 1992. So many little details make the world and the characters feel alive. Even the effects are nice. And no noticeable slowdown to boot.
Audio Score: 5
Audio Notes:
One of the best soundtracks of the 16 bit era. Iconic melodies that I can play in my head anytime. Very memorable sounds as well.
