Legend of Hero Tonma

Ghouls n Ghosts meets Contra

Genre: action - gun

Publisher: TTI

Year: 1993

System: TurboGrafx-16

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

One hit deaths. Brutal difficult but it's fair and encourages you to git gud. Long, floaty jump. You leap quickly, Hoover in the air, and then breakfast pick up speed on the descent. Takes some getting used to. Otherwise the controls feel great and the projectile attacks are satisfying. You can also bop most enemies. Almost everything takes more than one hit. I wish they all died with a single shot, Contra style. Lots of power-ups to collect. Two problems are the 40% draw distance and frequent slowdown. Not deal killers but they each slow down the action.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

6 or 7 very short levels. They're difficult but again very short. They alternate between horizontal and vertical stages and remind me a lot of Wizards and Warriors. They're well designed and I immensely enjoyed playing through the whole game.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

Lovely Engrish translation. Feels like a proper Kid Icarus game. Save the princess!

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Cute sprites. Great use of color. Nice screen scrolling. Backgrounds are static with no parallax scrolling. Cute but mostly NES+ quality graphics. Tons of slowdown

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Nearly perfect soundtrack and sound effects. The title theme is probably the best track but each level has its own song.

Overall Score: 79
