Lemmings for Genesis

Lemmings

The O.G. action puzzler

Genre: puzzle - platform

Publisher: Sunsoft

Year: 1992

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

What can you say about Lemmings? It's a near perfect puzzle game. It's a series of 100 puzzles with surprisingly twitchy and precise gameplay. Moving the cursor works well enough, although a mouse would be lovely. Simple one-button controls with an ever-present menu are the standard by which all action-puzzlers should be graded.

Level Design Score: 5

Level Design Notes:

After a quick series of tutorials you're on your own to figure out the puzzles which quickly become devious and are always addictive and satisfying to complete. Wonderful difficulty curve. Play for as long as you'd like and use a password to pick up where you left.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Simple premise and I appreciate that they didn't try to give the lemmings 90s 'tude or some such nonsense. It's just a game about lemmings who will do whatever you tell them to do. Now off you go. Oh and the little bit of personality that they did include is perfectly charming, like the "oh no" a lemming calls out when he's about to explode. So satisfying.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

I'd like to rate it higher because it's so darn cute, but the miniscule graphics are just that - miniscule. They get the job done but won't win any awards. good nuff

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Audio is a considerable step down from the SNES version but otherwise still enjoyable. At least the music anyway. The sounds effects, on the other hand, are pretty bad. Many have been removed, like the cute voices of the Lemmings. The rest of the sounds are such poor quality that I have to take off points.

Overall Score: 79
