Lester the Unlikely

Prince of Persia starring Screech from Saved by the Bell

Genre: adventure - platform

Publisher: DTMC

Year: 1994

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 0

Gameplay Notes:

Where to begin? This game has some of the worst controls in a video game. Lester is incredibly immobile. He walks slower than the turtles who act as enemies and his run There's a built-in half-second delay for all inputs. This makes it nearly impossible to time your jumps, effectively use the run movement, or use your only attack (kick). Fall damage for pretty much any distance of fall, so you have to climb down. 6 inch vertical on your jump Lester randomly becomes too afraid to run or jump or whatever so he refuses to do what you tell him to do. Just completely, utterly not fun in any way

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

I refuse to play beyond the first two levels. Thankfully they aren't collectathons, so I guess kudos for Tons of cheap hits. There's only one very specific solution to every encounter and if you guess wrong you're toast. Only 3 lives. This game would be much better if there were unlimited lives.

Theme Score: 0

Theme Notes:

Stupidest concept ever. Who wants to play as a nerd with absolutely zero physical skills.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Some decent animation, but Lester is a horrible character model. So unappealing The art style aims for ultra realism as evidenced by the background and Lester's sprite, but the enemy sprites look more flat and cartoony and the platforms and other foreground elements are similarly square and decidedly not detailed.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

The unbearable, 2 measure-long song playing is the cherry on top of this crap-fest. I took my headphones out after only a minute

Overall Score: 11
