Magic School Bus, (Scholastic's) The: Space Exploration Game

Mars needs Ms. Frizzle

Genre: educational - n/a

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1995

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

A series of minigames including clones of Wing Commander, Asteroids, Arkanoid, Moon Lander, and a platformer. There are also simple puzzles like a slide puzzle. Tons of variety, although they repeat in the same sequence level after level, so it gets tiring on a long playthrough. Controls are only ok. I might even call this a good game if the controls had been a touch more responsive. As it is it plays like most licensed titles.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Again, tons of variety in the levels. Some are quite fun, like the Asteroid and Wing Commander levels.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

My kids enjoyed the Magic School Bus show and this maintains some of that feel. Still, it's dorky. Some kid shows age well but this isn't one of them. Still, I love astronomy so a game centered around learning about the solar system is appealing.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Colorful and happy artwork. Many of the games have impressive sprites and effects. There's also quite a bit of variety between the games.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Not too shabby. Nothing I'd want to listen to outside the game, mind you.

Overall Score: 55
