Magical Chase

Witch cute-em-up is your favorite?

Genre: shooter - horizontal

Publisher: TTI

Year: 1993

System: TurboGrafx-16

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Great controls and some fun weapons and powerups. Unfortunately these are obtained via a store which really breaks up the action. Why not just collect them during gameplay or between levels? In any case, movement feels great and all the regular shooter features are here. Three difficulty levels make it accessible. Despite its charm it's not a very challenging or technical shooter.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Mostly standard fare (for a cute-em-up) but the later levels have some fun and unique elements. Level 3 has a really neat take on the cave/constrained space element in so many other shooters.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

Bright, cheerful, cute, and fun. Parodius is on the PG-13 bonker side of things while this is quarely in the G-rated cartoony side.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Has a wonderful style, but the graphics are quite simple. Not much parallax scrolling or other effects. But the sprites are lovely.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Fun music and cheery sound effects.

Overall Score: 81
