Legendary Axe, The

Caveman Castlevania

Genre: action - hack n slash

Publisher: NEC

Year: 1989

System: TurboGrafx-16

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Plays a lot like the platform sections of Actraiser. Has the same slightly-awkward movement and a long, sweeping sword attack. Well, in this case it's an axe. Jumping fully commits you so the best strategy is to stay grounded as much as possible. Once you get used to it movement feels good. Enemies move quickly but have predictable patterns. They can overwhelm you if you fight many at once so it's generally best to move slowly to let them spawn one at a time.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

The levels are kind of boring. They're pretty much just a straight walk to the with some minor platforming here and there. Combat represents the majority of this game's challenge

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Love it. It feels like Caveman Castlevania. There's no story as near as I can tell, but the world is convincing and interesting.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Lovely all around. Vibrant colors and decent sprite work. Yes, it's a bit on the simple side, but it has a strong visual language and style.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

I was bopping my head in every level. The soundtrack isn't quite on par with Castlvania, Actraiser, and the like, but I really enjoyed it.
