Marvel Super Heroes in War of the Gems
The Infinity saga before it was coolGenre: action - beat em up
Publisher: Capcom
Year: 1996
System: SNES
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
Very similar to the X-Men game. Same basic structure anyway - five playable characters with several sets of levels to play through. There's a bit more flexibility in that you can play as any character in any level you wish. Controls are simplified with fewer attacks than X-Men had. Just punch and one special move. Gameplay feels a bit slower, especially with Hulk and Iron Man. Good hit detection but enemies score a lot of cheap hits because of the overly long animations.
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
I love that you can pick whatever level you want. There's only one truly awful level - the Boston Aquarium. The rest are ok to good. Some light platforming but mostly just a linear brawler. After beating 4 levels a new set open up for a total of 12 levels. Good variety.
Theme Score: 5
Theme Notes:
Some of the best Marvel superheroes, including Spider-Man, Wolverine, Cap America, Iron Man, and Hulk. The backdrop is the Infinity Wars storyline (kind of) which isn't as epic as Infinity Gauntlet but all the key elements are there, especially the gems and Adam Warlock and Thanos.
Art Style Score: 5
Art Style Notes:
Fantastic character models, animation, artwork, color, and effects.
Audio Score: 4
Audio Notes:
Sounds design is excellent although I liked the Wolverine claw sounds from X-Men better. Landing a hit feels satisfying largely due to the sounds. Music is good in spots but bad in some. Overall it's nice.
