Mick & Mack as the Global Gladiators

Boogerman meets Splatoon...on behalf of McDonald's?

Genre: action - gun

Publisher: Virgin Interactive

Year: 1992

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Where to begin? Controls are responsive, although there's a momentum issue like Sonic where you have to build up a little bit of speed to get moving. You attack with a squirt gun, I guess, that shoots orange goo. The goo can be aimed a little bit up a little bit down or straight and it goes about a quarter of the screen away from you and then drips down and kills enemies anywhere along its path. It's a unique mechanic that works okay. Enemies are various forms of slime. Major David Perry camera going on. It snaps around like crazy. They could add a really good game if the level design and theme were better.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

About what you'd expect. Roughly three screen tall corridor that ends in the far right. The objective is just to get to the end, but there's a ton of pointless collect-a-thon elements. Got to collect those golden arches. Levels are uninspired but not poorly designed.

Theme Score: 1

Theme Notes:

You're in slime world killing what look like anamorphic boogers while collecting golden arches which you deliver to Ronald McDonald at the end of each stage. What is going on here?

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Everything is green. This is the greenest game since Boogerman. Sprites are very well animated but not even a little bit appealing. Sparse backgrounds without much parallax or anything else. Interesting. Platforms are easy to distinguish.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

Rocking music that feels completely misplaced in this game. Cringey sound effects. Taking damage plays a loud "ouch" voice straight out of an 80s cartoon. Shooting your weapon and enemy attacks and deaths are various squeaky fart noises. Almost everything happening on screen causes the sound to play. Even common things like jumping or landing or an enemy, moving or shooting. It's a cacophony of sounds. It's a bit much.

Overall Score: 64
