Moto Roader for TurboGrafx-16

Moto Roader

The racing game where you don't have to race

Genre: racing - overhead

Publisher: NEC

Year: 1989

System: TurboGrafx-16

Gameplay Score: 0

Gameplay Notes:

Truly bizzare gameplay. It's a blatant Micro Machines clone but it only copies the weird Head to Head mode where all racers must be on the screen at the same time. In MM this was only a competition between two racers but here there are 5 vehicles. When a car goes offscreen they are recentered in the screen whihc often places them near the front of the pack. Weird. Vehicles have no collision so you can drive through everyone else all you like. The camera is very zoomed in so cars are going offscreen constantly. VERY slow movement. Maybe this improves as you upgrade your car but wow is it slow going. Wonky controls. Left isn't always left. Instead you steer in the direction of the screen. So, when the track lefts toward the left of the screen you have to press and hold left on the d-pad. This sound logical but it's unlike any overhead racer I've ever played and is thus incredibly counterintuitive. I could NOT get my mind wrapped around it.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

The tracks are long and winding but there's nothing on them to speed you up or give you offensive or defensive capabilities. They're just there.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Half Japanese girls in bunny suits greet you pre and post race. There's also a vague near-future setting.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

The cars look like they were lifted from Speed Racer. The camera is zoomed in too far. Not much to look at.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Boring but not terrible

Overall Score: 20
