Mystical Fighter

The title says it all

Genre: action - beat em up

Publisher: DreamWorks

Year: 1992

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Despite the Kabuki theme this is a by-the-numbers beat em up. Moves include a simple punch attack, a jump, a jump kick, and a roll and roll kick like in TMNT IV. You can also grab and either soon and throw, Haggar-style, or toss over your shoulder. Everything just works. Movement is just right - not too fast or slow. Enemies are rather stupid and rarely attack. They also have little health do they don't overstay their welcome. One of the easiest brawlers I've ever played.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

The levels are pretty standard with a little bit of 3D features like the old NES TMNT games where you come into the foreground a little bit. The interesting features of the levels are in the background. The levels themselves don't have much going on but they're fine.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

I'm not sure what's going on in this game but it's fun. It's different for sure. It's a Japanese folk setting and you play as a Kabuki character. The enemies include little monsters, sumo wrestlers, and samurai swordsman.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

The artwork is definitely early generation. It's very dark but the sprites are large and grotesquely attractive if that makes sense. It certainly has a good style to it that's unlike most games in the Genesis library.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

I really enjoyed the music in this game. It doesn't really match the setting like it's not your typical Japanese style, but it's lively and changes with each level. The sound effects are also decent

Overall Score: 73
