Mystic Defender for Genesis

Mystic Defender

Low mega power Magician Lord

Genre: action - gun

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1989

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Stiff movement. You can't move while shooting so combat is a halting experience. You must hold down on attack button to charge shots which is always a good time, eh? When combined with the weird movement it becomes difficult to avoid taking damage. Just move slowly. You acquire new weapons and can switch between them. The flame thrower is probably the most fun to use, but having to charge it constantly is a major annoyance. I much prefer Contra 3's flamethrower, thank you. Hard to get the timing of when to jump off a platform, but not terrible. Enemies respawn when you leave the screen. Uggh

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Tons of blind or difficult jumps. Lots of stairs which are a series of stacked platforms that you can't walk up. You have to jump. A few interesting ideas but ultimately pretty standard stuff.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Weird mashup of mysticism, Japanese folklore, sci-fi, and body horror. Some of the enemies seem straight out of Splatterhouse. It's a weird mix but I like it.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Reminds me of Magician Lord. A very simple, early 16-bit Magician Lord. Backgrounds are generally simple. Sprites look nice and have decent color. Overall it's attractive, if only for an early gen title.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

I had high hopes for the soundtrack but it's whispy and boring. The sound effects get old quickly since you're charging and firing all the time.

Overall Score: 59
