NFL Football

Konami's folly

Genre: sports - football

Publisher: Konami

Year: 1993

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 0

Gameplay Notes:

Must wait for the computer to pick a play. why? 5 FPS no joke Insta tackle when you get anywhere near opponents Passing game is atrocious. Hike ball and screen zooms out wide. Disorienting since frame rate is so bad. Throw but pressing and holding the button but sometimes it doesn't throw at all. Barely any time so sacks are common. Impossible to catch the ball. The camera switches from side view to downfield view with ball coming toward you and you have to turn around to catch it. I think? I could only catch maybe one on ten throws.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

Exhibition and season Play selection is easy

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

NFL license The play by play is cool and can be turned off

Art Style Score: 0

Art Style Notes:

Utterly disgusting. Player models are ok but very pixelated. They are tall compared to something like Madden, but they look horrible in motion. Actually there framerate is so poor that I wouldn't even call it motion. Even the field itself is a pixelated mess. The camera's constant zooming and rotation is disorienting and highlights the poor graphics

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

The Konami logo intro is one of the iconic audio experiences of the 16 bit era. Like the 20th Century Fox and Lucasfilm logos from the 80s. It's awful to hear it in games like this which were outsourced. It sounds like crap here which is an indicator of what is to come. A constant voice over on every play is novel. I'll bet this ate up so many resources that the FPS and gameplay were sacrificed.
