NHL Stanley Cup Hockey for SNES

NHL Stanley Cup Hockey

The worst example of Mode 7

Genre: sports - hockey

Publisher: Nintendo

Year: 1993

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 0

Gameplay Notes:

Same engine as NCAA Basketball. Uggh. Plays a bit faster than that game. The worst example of Mode 7 ever. Goalie wanders away from the net. Passing works alright but is jarring. Good luck scoring. Camera sticks to the guy with the puck making it really hard to spot and move your guy. You're off screen often.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Standard modes - exhibition, season, and best of 7. The only option is to turn off penalties.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

NHL license. Looks cheap

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

Scaling of sprites is hideous. It's a pixelated mess. View is so low you can see the whole rink ahead of you which means sprites can be well into the distance. They added a crowd in the HUD but it's a really simple image. Very ugly game

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

The grunt when checking is straight up disturbing. You hear every slap of hockey sticks and the hum of the crowd.

Overall Score: 16
