Oscar

Not the award type

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Titus

Year: 1996

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Sonic clone with without any offensive capabilities. Actually, I'd call this a Bubsy clone Your only attack is to bop enemies but most take multiple hits and they get i-frames. You fall so quickly after hitting them that you fall into their hitbox and then take damage when their i-frames wear off. All the standard western dev issues - jerky camera, dumb hud, required collectathon to exit the level, cheap hits Character moves way too fast making it extremely hard to control, especially with the camera snapping back and forth.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

Labyrinthine level design. Hard to tell what is background vs foreground and what is a platform you can jump up through vs what is a hard ceiling. Too many short ceilings that restrict your movement, especially since your only means of attack is to jump on top of enemies.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Mascot with a 'tude. His stopped animation is to stare at the screen and make mean and then mocking faces at you. Uggh Otherwise standard platformer setting.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Backgrounds are so busy it's difficult to spot enemies or collectables in the foreground. THQ++ graphic quality Some good animation but everything is SOOOO busy it's obnoxious to look at. Reminds me of Jim Powers but without the reverse parallax scrolling.

Audio Score: 0

Audio Notes:

Abysmal music and sound. Plays a sound bit when hit Sound effects don't match what happens on screen. Like when you bump into a turtle it makes the sound of a giant metal spring. Why?

Overall Score: 21

Review ID: 398
