Out of This World

The OG cinematic platformer

Genre: adventure - platform

Publisher: Interplay

Year: 1992

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

100% trial-and-error, die-to-win gameplay. That's the only reason I beat this as a kid. Some of the worst slowdown on the SNES. Really laggy, imprecise input. I've got way too much nostalgia for this game, because it really is a horrible game to play. Really, really bad controls. Luckily they're nice and simple. The gunplay is clunky at best but plays a huge part in the progression.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

If you've got the game memorized then there's only about 15 minutes of gameplay here. Puzzles are decent, but you can soft lock quite often. The "levels" are far too long. In other words, checkpoints are sparse. Scripted events are often tense, exciting, and quite memorable. Props for etching the entire game into my long term memory.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

The setting of a scientist's experiment gone wrong is a trope at this point. It takes liberal inspiration from Frankenstein and Tron and has since inspired the likes of Half-Life and Axiom Verge. So yeah, good job for continuing a trend. It's a shame it doesn't have a proper ending tho.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Let's just say it hasn't aged well. Extremely low-poly artwork and sprites are charming, I suppose. The black bars on top, bottom, and sides probably helps with performance but they make the graphics even less impressive.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Atmospheric but muted ambiance is great. Even better, the music associated with the scripted events are incredible. Does a great job of evoking curiosity, fear, anxiety, and other emotions.

Overall Score: 53
