Outlander for Genesis
Review #4411
Outlander
First person Road Rash
Gameplay
Plays so much better than the SNES version. It's still a short game with no real way to get good and won by skill. You still drive until you die from hitting barriers and bikers.
Hit detection is still dismal so good luck.
Thankfully the controls are vastly improved. Think of this as a first person Road Rash.
When you run out of gas or stop you get out and play a boring but playable side scroller. Again, much improved over the dismal SNES version.
Level Design
I guess the road you're driving on is interesting as it has hills and hazards galore. But again you'll only see 5 minutes worth so there's no variety.
Theme
There were so many Mad Max rip-offs! This one is as blatant as could be.
Art Style
Whereas the SNES version had good artwork but terrible performance, this game is the exact opposite. The artwork uses colors the Genesis clearly doesn't understand so instead of a solid color it makes a checkerboard. Ugly.
Despite this the driving looks convincing and moves quickly.
It's all fairly ugly but I like seeing it in motion.
Audio
Meh
