OutRunners for Genesis
Review #4414
OutRunners
Gameplay
Always plays in half screen so you can see the other racers view. Would've liked to have the option to use the whole screen.
Same general gameplay as its predecessors.
Hitting other cars seemingly has no consequence. The physics seem off completely.
No way to keep pace with some opponents. No idea how to compete.
Level Design
No branching paths. Each race is a competition against another racer. Would've liked some other modes or something more chill.
Theme
Has an edgy 90s vibe. Silly animations play at the end of each race
Art Style
Everything looks...weird. The turning animation shows your car nearly side on, even when making a very minor adjustment. That's not how physics works. The other cars always present themselves directly from behind so your car looks even more out of place while turning.
The background are horribly pixelated as well.
Audio
Some of the worst quality sounds effects I've ever heard. Everything is a scratchy mess. The Ouch sounds happens even second or two and is so long and abrasive.
On the other hand the music is quite good, although it's far more mellow than I was expecting. It doesn't match the competitive vibe of the game.
