OutRun 2019
Sega's answer to F-ZeroGenre: racing - arcade
Publisher: Sega
Year: 1993
System: Genesis
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
Same basic gameplay as Outrun. Checkpoints, branching paths, avoid opponents and off-road. Gimmick is a speed boost which powers up while going full speed. Not quite sure what triggers it but it kicks in randomly and often at unwelcome times, like in the middle of a turn. I much prefer deliberate boost management like in F-Zero or Burnout 2. Control is responsive. Not something I'd play for a long time but it's fun while it lasts.
Level Design Score: 3
Level Design Notes:
Broken up into races with 5 or so segments each. I like that it's not just one long race like the original.
Theme Score: 2
Theme Notes:
This game has an identity crisis. Weird futuristic Blade Runner-esque motif. But you're on roads so it feels tacked on to an otherwise standard racing game. You also now drove 550MPH instead of 200MPH but again it's cosmetic. Obvious F-Zero rip-off
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
Performs well. It's no F-Zero but the framerate and speed are much better than Outrun.
Audio Score: 4
Audio Notes:
Some thumping tunes. I was rocking along with it. The sound effects are decent as well
